A rice cooker or rice steamer is a kitchen appliance primarily used for cooking rice. These come in three variations as electric, microwave and gas variants. They are usually used for the preparation of plain or lightly seasoned rice, but more specific and elaborate recipes can also be made by studying cookbooks that are devoted entirely to dishes prepared using a rice cooker. Cooking rice in a rice cooker is very simple and effective. Almost all rice cookers keep the rice warm after it's cooked. There is no need to look after the rice while cooking, since this appliance comes with an automatic timer that clicks when the rice is ready.

Each rice cooker comes with a cup that is used for measuring rice for that particular cooker. The graduations on the bowl for adding water rely on using that particular measuring cup. The rice cooker cups comes in different size, but are typically 180ml, which is the size of a traditional Japanese cup.

Find out the amount of rice needed. Most of the recipes need 2 parts water to 1 part rice. Use the plastic cup provided. The amount of water needed to add depends merely on the type of rice that is used:

White, long grain - 1 3/4 cups of water per 1 cup of rice
White, medium grain - 1 1/2 cups of water per 1 cup of rice
White, short grain - 1 1/2 cups of water per 1 cup of rice
Brown, long grain - 2 1/4 cups of water per 1 cup of rice
Parboiled - 2 cups of water per 1 cup of rice.
Grease the pot with cooking oil. Otherwise, the rice will stick on the bottom and sides. Rinse the rice until water runs clear. This will wash off excess starch and give you fluffier rice. Put rice and water in the pot. Keep the pot into the base and cover with the lid. Push down the switch to start cooking. The switch will automatically return to the "Keep warm" setting when the rice is done, usually in about 20 minutes.
