General Purposes of Utility Knives
Utility knives are usually about 4-8 inches long and are lightweight. They are used for light cutting, and should not be used for cutting heavy meats. These usually are used for:
- Vegetables
- Peeling potatoes
- Coring Strawberries
- Hulling strawberries
- Slicing fruits
There is another type of utility knife that is used out in the workshop, they are called box cutter or razor blade knives. They have a holder for a razor blade and when it needs sharpening, you replace the blade. You cannot do that with a "kitchen" utility knife. They are used for:
- Cutting boxes
- Cutting wires
- Stripping wires
- Cutting Styrofoam
- Cutting carpet
- Cutting thin sheets of metal
The differences are huge, as you can see, so make sure you get the one you need, whether for the kitchen or the workshop.
