As you can see there are many different ways to sharpen your knives. Check your manual that came with your knife to see which sharpener is the best and how to do it. You also may want to take it to a professional as some of the ways to sharpen knives use special tools that you do not have at home.
For smaller, cheaper knives you can do them at home with a regular sharpener you can buy at your hardware store for under ten dollars. Many can openers now have a knife sharpener on the back that is quick and easy to use. Just do not use them to sharpen any knife that has a serrated edge. That is the fastest way to ruin these kinds of knives. These have to be taken in if they ever become dull. However, serrated knives are usually guaranteed to stay sharp for the lifetime of the knife or they will replace them.
One of the most popular knife sharpeners today is a small hand tool that has two plates shaped as a V on the top. In order to use one, you simply stroke the knife away from you until the blade is at its desired sharpness. The advantage to this type of sharpener to others is that the user does not have to maintain the correct angle in order to sharpen the knife, as you have to do on a wet stone, as the V does it for you. For arthritis sufferers there are automatic sharpeners like this that will do the sharpening for you with the minimum of movement.
