General Purposes of a Bread Knife
A bread knife is normally 6 to 8 inches long and serrated. It is used to cut such items as:
- Breads
- Rolls
- Biscuits
- Tomatoes
- Cakes
- Fruits
- Baked Potatoes
- Meats
Bread knives are used to cut foods that are hard on the outside and soft on the inside, such as breads and rolls that are freshly baked and soft. The serrated edge makes it easier to cut. These knives are also great to cut certain meats that are not too tough such as hams and sausages. Bread knives usually stay the sharper longer than any other knife because it has a serrated edge, however, when it gets dull you will have to have it professionally sharpened. You will not be able to do it yourself unless you have the right equipment and most homes do not. Bread knives are commonly one of the knives included in knife sets and should be one of the three main knives one has when starting a home.
