How to Use a pressure cooker |
![]() |
| A Pressure Cooker is a special pot having an airtight, locking lid that is inclusive of a valve system that controls the internal pressure. Steam building inside the pot cooks the food at a very high temperature. This ability to cook at extremely high temperatures means foods that take hours, such as dried beans can cook in a fraction of the time. Modern pressure cookers are equipped with safety features to prevent mishaps that were occurring with the earlier ones. These include lids that must be locked into place before pressure will rise, an expanding rubber gasket that prevents from removing the lid until the pressure has been released to safe levels, and a safety valve that automatically reduces the pressure should there be a malfunction or in the event that one forgets to turn down the heat when high pressure is reached. These steps can be used as a simple guide to use a pressure cooker. They cannot be substituted for the manufacturer's instructions which come along with the pressure cooker model. Find out the specific cooking method and time for the recipe. Add required amount of liquid into the pressure cooker along with the food. Use the cooking rack, if required. Check the vent pipe to make certain that it is open and unclogged by holding the cover up to light. Then, place cover on pressure cooker and close securely. Place pressure regulator tightly on the vent pipe. Heat the pressure cooker until the pressure regulator begins to rock slowly. Adjust heat to maintain a slow, steady rocking motion. Cooking time begins at this point. Cook for the length of time specified in recipe, then reduce pressure as specified. When recipe states "let pressure drop of its own accord," set the cooker aside to cool. When recipe states "cool cooker at once," cool immediately under a water faucet or by pouring cold water over it. Pressure is completely reduced when the air vent/cover lock has dropped. Remove the pressure regulator. Then, remove pressure cooker cover and serve food. |
