How can I choose a percolator for gas or electric stove?

Buy percolator with heavy bottom to allow for even heating and do not buy percolators with plastic parts.

Cool Enamel it!

Probably one of the best types of multi-purpose coffee percolators around is the enameled steel variety. You've seen them. They are usually blue or black with white spots. The enameling process creates a vessel that can withstand high dry temperatures as well as flame. They are usually all metal except for the glass boiling bulb on top, so keeping a pot holder handy will be a necessity.

If that style of coffee maker is a bit too "rural" for your tastes, be sure to try one of the more modern copper bottomed stainless steel pots. These are, I believe, the heavy bottomed type the others were talking about.
