This question maybe stupid, but I don't know what is water softener? Is this some kind of luquid added to water to make it soft?

It's a unit used to soften water, by removing the minerals that cause the water to be hard.

Default think of it as

It's similar to a water filter in how you use it, instead of a cartridge, it's using metal beads to attract the minerals, most water sources only need a filter, check your warrentee on the machine to see if it voids it not using it, otherwise, if the quality is already there, it's not necessary.
