Back when I was in college I had a really in-expensive toaster oven and one night when I came in from being out late I was really hungry. So I put a frozen dinner in the toaster oven to cook. Then I left the kitchen and went out and started to watch TV... Well... I kinda fell asleep.... Then next thing I know, the place is full of smoke and the fire alarm is going off  !!!
ops: \r\n\r\nAnyways, I unplugged the toaster oven and pulled the burnt to a crisp dinner out and I had to air out the apartment! I am really glad when it was time to retire that old toaster oven I spent a little more money on one with a good timer... |

Oh dear! Thank goodness no real damage was done and no one got hurt. The same thing could have happened in the real oven or with the stove. I can't think how many times I put something to crisp in the broiler and forgot all about it.

I will sometimes crisp up garlic bread in the oven and wouldn't you know it, I end up burning it. My sister told me a sure fire way to avoid burning - turn the broiler on and leave the oven door open a little bit - that way you're right there watching it. I do that all the time now and seldom have i burned anything.
