Living and roasting in Indonesia I have been fortunate enough to have tried Kopi Luwak from Sumatra and also some samples from other parts of the archipelago. The coffee itself roasts differently from standard green beans. I found sample roasting the coffee that the oils from inside the bean were forced to the surface rather quickly. The coffee itself- when cupped against roasted bean samples of standard arabica from the same plantation, has a sweeter, almost over-ripe papaya flavour. Would I pay the price most of you have to for it??? Maybe for a once off experience yes...but quite honestly some of the better Indonesian varietals are of course better value for money. BTW how do you know Kopi Luwak really IS kopi luwak??? There is only one way to know for sure- have the green beans tested. The Luwak beans give off a very different signature from standard wet or dry processed beans.
