Actually...if you're not going to use up your coffee supply in two weeks, you should freeze them. They will be fresh for about a month or two. It's best to store them in an airtight container when freezing. Also, they cannot be defrosted and refrozen...it loses freshness after thawed. It's best to freeze them whole beaned and grind them just before brewing.

If you are going to store them at room temperature in your kitchen, it is best to store as whole beans. Tin cans and plastic bags can mess with the taste and freshness of the coffee. Try storing them either in a glass or ceramic container for best taste. They will stay fresh outside for about a week or two.
