Default what is chai tea?

What is chai tea? I know that "chai" itself means tea in Hindi, so why do we call it chai tea? Is tea different from chai tea?

Chai tea is rather a misnomer, I think.

Chai is the Indian word for tea. However, in North America we associate Chia with a spicy tea so we use the term Chai(tea) tea. There is also Chai coffee.\r\n\r\nBob

Chai Coffee \r\n \r\nYield: 6 \r\n\r\nWhile Chai tea has become a current favourite, using the same spices in coffee is absolutely delicious.\r\n\r\nIngredients: \r\n\r\n1 cup whipping cream\r\n2 tbsp sugar\r\n6 cups dark roast brewed coffee\r\n4 cardamom pods\r\n4 star anise\r\n3 whole cloves\r\n2 cinnamon sticks\r\n6 oz coffee liqueur or brandy\r\nground cinnamon, for garnish\r\n\r\nDirections: \r\n\r\n\r\nWhip cream to soft peaks, fold in sugar and chill.\r\n\r\n\r\nPour hot coffee into a saucepot. Crush cardamom pods and star anise and add to pot. Add cloves and cinnamon, and steep over low heat for 5 minutes. Strain. Fill each of 6 glasses with an ounce of coffee liqueur and pour coffee over. Top with whipped cream and a sprinkle of cinnamon.

\r\n\r\nYes, in Russian tea sounds like chai, but this word was adopted from some other language. Like Bob said it's the Indian word for tea.
