Probably one of the best types of multi-purpose coffee percolators around is the enameled steel variety. You've seen them. They are usually blue or black with white spots. The enameling process creates a vessel that can withstand high dry temperatures as well as flame. They are usually all metal except for the glass boiling bulb on top, so keeping a pot holder handy will be a necessity.

If that style of coffee maker is a bit too "rural" for your tastes, be sure to try one of the more modern copper bottomed stainless steel pots. These are, I believe, the heavy bottomed type the others were talking about.
